This paper discusses the development of the Norwegian and Swedish hospital systems from a historical-comparative perspective. The development of the Swedish system has been characterised by institutional stability, while the Norwegian system has been characterised by instability and change. The paper contributes to research on the historical development of health care systems. In a more general sense, it also informshistorical research about welfare states.
